CHAPTER 17

Holy hell. Skylar looked downright sinful. Hades was never going to be able to make it through this. It had taken all of his considerable strength not to toss her on the table and fuck her brains out the second she walked in the door. The black dress she wore looked like it had been painted on her, fitting her like an absolute glove, and he wanted those heels digging into his back so badly he could practically feel it. Had he ever wanted her more than he did in this moment? Not possible.

But then he recalled the conversation he had overheard outside of her room earlier and his desire faded as rage began to burn. She told some other male that she loved him, and the soon-to-be-dead-man had responded in kind. When they had been in the training room earlier, he thought – had let himself hope – that something had shifted between them. He thought she was beginning to feel for him as he had begun to feel for her. He had forgiven any past deeds done by Persephone, didn’t even consider her and Skylar to be one and the same any longer, but apparently that had been a mistake. Having Skylar play him like a damn fiddle, making him believe she wanted him back when all along she was just biding her time to get back to Luke...well, he was ashamed to admit that it had hurt him more than Persephone’s betrayal ever had.

But now he understood and he wouldn’t fall for it again. She was in love with someone else? Fine, Hades would show her that she meant nothing to him as well. He did still need her to agree to the marriage, but he couldn't stop himself from playing this little game. She needed to know that he hadn't fallen for her tricks, that he was just as unaffected as she was. And what better way to prove that than with a little dinner theater? Skylar sat at the other end of the table, staring as his chosen demoness for the evening eased into his lap. Her face was now a blank mask of indifference, the same cold, confident one he'd seen her don time and time again, but he had seen rage flare in her eyes for a moment. Rage and...hurt? No, couldn't be. Why would she be hurt? Disappointed that her plan to seduce and attempt to kill him (that's what he assumed the plan was anyway) had failed, sure, but not hurt.

He ran his fingers up and down the demoness' bare leg as she nuzzled his neck. He had to keep himself from grimacing – he wasn’t enjoying himself whatsoever, and neither was his cock. Sure, the female was beautiful, but only the blonde-haired vixen across the way held any kind of allure for him anymore. Very inconvenient.

“So, did you have a nice afternoon?” Hades asked politely.

“De-lightful," she answered too sweetly. "And you?” She ran a finger around the edge of her wine glass and licked her lips subtly.
